Selene was born around 1383 in Hungary to a stone mason and blacksmith father, her mother, and an older sister. She lived as a happy child who loved painting and playing 'Silly Goose' until the winter of Lucian's escape. To protect the location of William's prison, Viktor ordered the execution of everyone involved in its construction, including Selene's family. A Lycan killed them in their home but spared Selene, unable to bear draining her dry as she reminded him of his daughter, Sonja. Trickery followed, as Viktor convinced Selene that a pack of Lycans was responsible for the massacre. This lie fueled a six-century-long crusade where she served as one of Viktor's most loyal and powerful Death Dealers. She isolated herself from the hedonistic vampire coven, dedicating her life to the 'sacred' duty of exterminating the Lycan species.

In Their Own Story

Selene's path changed when she met Michael Corvin in a subway station moments before a shootout in the first film. Kate Beckinsale noted that Selene had almost forgotten she was a woman, focused solely on revenge until Michael triggered a memory of humanity. Unlike other vampires who viewed her as 'icy' and 'unemotional,' others like Kraven quickly sensed her feelings for Michael. Selene defended Michael despite knowing Viktor would kill her for it after he was bitten by a Lycan. When the truth emerged that Viktor had murdered her family, she defected from the clan. In a fit of rage after Markus claimed her family were 'insignificant,' Selene snapped his wing talon and stabbed him through the head before pushing him into helicopter rotors. She also attempted a suicide mission to kill Markus and William after believing Michael was dead, only to be revived by his hybrid abilities.

She possesses 'extreme intelligence' and 'sharp intuition,' trusting almost no one while maintaining a 'passion for truth laced with vengeance.' Her daughter Eve later misinterpreted this stoicism as being 'cold as one already dead' until Selene explained her heart was simply broken.
