Conversely, William was bitten by a wolf, becoming the first Werewolf who could not return to human form and whose bite infected even the dead with Lycanthropy. To contain William's threat, Markus approached Viktor, a dying Hungarian general, offering him immortality in exchange for his military expertise and army. This alliance created the Death Dealers and established the vampire hierarchy. However, Markus eventually fell from power; Viktor betrayed and imprisoned him, then falsely claimed to be the first of the 'true' vampires. Centuries later, after being revived by Lycan blood, Markus sought to rescue William and use his blood to create a hybrid army, but he was defeated and killed by an enhanced Selene.

He approached Viktor, a dying warlord in Hungary, proposing a deal: Markus would grant Viktor immortality if he used his army to fight the Lycans. Viktor accepted, becoming one of the first Vampire Elders and founding the Death Dealers from his loyal soldiers. For centuries, Markus remained hidden or overthrown by Viktor, who manipulated history to position himself as the original vampire. During the events of Underworld: Evolution, Markus was revived by the blood of a Lycan named Singe. He immediately went on a rampage to rescue William, intending to use Michael Corvin's unique bloodline to transform his brother into a hybrid. In the final confrontation, an enhanced Selene fought Markus, stabbing him through the head with one of his own wing talons and knocking him into spinning helicopter blades, dismembering him and ending his life.
